On 16 September 2019, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) granted clearance to the Survey on the Technology Utilization Status of Manufacturing Industry in the Philippines by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

The main objective of the survey is to determine the technology utilization status of the manufacturing companies in the Philippines. The survey results will help the DTI in determining and crafting policy interventions to prepare manufacturing industries in taking a big leap towards the opportunities in Industry 4.0.

As defined in the report of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) entitled The Next Production Revolution Implications for Governments and Business, the term “Industry 4.0” or the fourth industrial revolution refers to “the use in industrial production of recent, and often interconnected, digital technologies that enable new and more efficient processes, and which in some cases yield new goods and services”.

The data items to be collected in the survey include the following:

  • major products
  • employment
  • export and total revenues
  • domestic and foreign ownership
  • current experience/status per manufacturing dimensions

The survey will collect data from 500 manufacturing companies across all regions in the country from the list of Bureau of Trade and Industrial Policy Research (BTIPR) - DTI. Results of the survey are expected to be released in November 2019.

The survey was reviewed and cleared for conduct under the Statistical Survey Review and Clearance System (SSRCS), a mechanism being implemented by the PSA by virtue of Rule 28 of Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of Republic Act (RA) No. 10625 to:

  • ensure sound design for data collection;
  • minimize the burden placed upon respondents;
  • effect economy in statistical data collection;
  • eliminate unnecessary duplication of statistical data collection efforts; and
  • achieve better coordination of government statistical activities.

In line with this, the PSA enjoins the manufacturing companies to support the said survey.
