Fisheries production decreased annually by 6.2 percent in the second quarter of 2024

The total volume of fisheries production in the second quarter of 2024 was registered at 1.02 million metric tons. It diminished by 6.2 percent from the 1.08 million metric tons output in the same quarter of the previous year. Decrease in production was noted from marine municipal fisheries, inland municipal fisheries, and aquaculture, while commercial fisheries reported increment in production. (Figure 1 and Table 1)

The commercial fisheries production at 286.60 thousand metric tons posted a 21.9 percent increment from the same quarter of the previous year’s output of 235.17 thousand metric tons. The subsector comprised 28.2 percent of the total fisheries production. (Figure 2 and Table 1)

On marine municipal fisheries, the total volume of production was estimated at 229.37 thousand metric tons. This volume was 3.7 percent lower than the second quarter of 2023 level of 238.13 thousand metric tons. The subsector’s share to the total fisheries production was 22.5 percent. (Figure 3 and Table 1)

During the quarter, inland municipal fisheries production was recorded at 30.10 thousand metric tons. The volume declined by 21.3 percent from the same quarter a year ago estimate of 38.23 thousand metric tons. The subsector contributed 3.0 percent to the total fisheries production in the second quarter of 2024. (Figure 4 and Table 1)

Aquaculture production was registered at 471.40 thousand metric tons in the second quarter of 2024. This was lower by 17.7 percent from the previous year’s same period output of 573.06 thousand metric tons.  Aquaculture subsector constituted the highest share of 46.3 percent to the total fisheries production during the quarter. (Figure 5 and Table 1)

Of the 21 major species, output reductions were primarily noted in seaweed (-25.8%), roundscad (galunggong, -13.6%), big-eyed scad (matangbaka, -22.3%), tilapia (-6.0%), and milkfish (bangus, -4.6%). (Table 2)

On the other hand, increments were mainly reported in skipjack (gulyasan, 141.2%), yellowfin tuna (tambakol/bariles, 43.2%), frigate tuna (tulingan, 33.7%), P. Vannamei (putian, 33.6%), and bigeye tuna (tambakol/bariles, 94.1%).
