Agriculture contracted by 1.11 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016. The devastating effects of Typhoons “Karen” and “Lawin” pulled down production in the crops and fisheries subsectors. Meanwhile, the livestock and poultry subsectors posted output increments. At current prices, gross value of agricultural production amounted to P456.4 billion or 1.35 percent higher than the previous year’s record. The annual performance of agriculture was marked by a 1.41 percent decline in output in 2016.

The crops subsector posted a 2.62 percent contraction in output in the fourth quarter of 2016. It contributed 50.98 percent to the total agricultural production. Palay and corn production contracted by 3.62 percent and 0.15 percent, respectively. Production gains were noted among banana, pineapple, abaca, peanut, cassava, sweet potato, tomato, eggplant and calamansi. Output losses were recorded by coconut, sugarcane, coffee, mango, tobacco, mongo, onion, cabbage and rubber. The subsector grossed P268.8 billion at current prices, up by 2.61 percent from last year’s record. For the whole year of 2016, crop production decreased by 3.32 percent.
 
Production in the livestock subsector expanded by 3.41 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016. It accounted for 17.85 percent of the total agricultural output. Except for goat, all components of the subsector registered output increments. Gross value of production amounted to P74.5 billion, representing a 3.49 percent growth over last year’s record. The subsector grew by 4.59 percent in 2016.
 
The poultry subsector produced 1.00 percent more output in the fourth quarter of 2016. It shared 15.03 percent in the total agricultural output. Production of chicken and duck eggs increased by 1.68 percent and 7.40 percent, respectively. At current prices, the subsector grossed P51.2 billion or 4.27 percent less than previous year’s record. For the period January to December 2016, the subsector grew by 1.39 percent.
 
Production in the fisheries subsector declined by 2.95 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016. It contributed 16.14 percent to the total agricultural output. Among the subsector’s components, only milkfish recorded an output increase at 5.37 percent during the period. At current prices, the gross value of fisheries production amounted to P61.8 billion, down by 1.59 percent from last year’s earnings. For 2016, the subsector recorded a 4.18 percent drop in production.
 
On the average, farmgate prices increased by 2.49 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016. Price increments were registered in the crops subsector at 5.37 percent, livestock subsector at 0.08 percent and fisheries subsector at 1.40 percent. On the other hand, the poultry subsector posted an average price reduction of 5.22 percent. On an annual basis, prices received by farmers went up by an average of 3.36 percent.
