The total cattle production from January to March 2022 was registered at 52.39 thousand metric tons, liveweight. It slowed down by -1.6 percent from it’s previous year’s same quarter output of 53.24 thousand metric tons, liveweight.

The top five (5) cattle producing regions were Northern Mindanao with 20.9 percent share, followed by Western Visayas with 10.0 percent; Ilocos Region, 9.8 percent; CALABARZON, 8.4 percent; and Central Visayas, 8.3 percent. These regions accounted for 57.4 percent of the country’s total cattle production.

Relative to their levels in the same quarter of 2021, eight (8) regions recorded decreases in production during the quarter. Eastern Visayas exhibited the highest annual reduction of -24.3 percent, from 0.62 thousand metric tons, liveweight in the first quarter of 2021 to 0.47 thousand metric tons, liveweight this quarter. As of 31 March 2022, the total cattle inventory was estimated at 2.54 million heads. About 13.0 percent of cattle population was recorded in Central Visayas, followed by CALABARZON with 10.2 percent share and Ilocos Region with 9.9 percent share. These three regions accounted for 33.1 percent of the country’s total cattle population. (Figure 2)

The average farmgate price of cattle for slaughter in backyard farms during the quarter was quoted at PhP 138.00 per kilogram, liveweight. It decline by -2.5 percent compared with the previous year’s same quarter price of PhP 141.50 per kilogram, liveweight.

During the reference quarter, the highest farmgate price of cattle for slaughter was noted in March at PhP 146.37 per kilogram, liveweight, while the lowest was in January at PhP 133.12 per kilogram, liveweight. (Figure 3)

TECHNICAL NOTES

This Cattle Situation Report presents the cattle industry in terms of volume of production, inventory by region, and average farmgate prices. The report is prepared to serve as a ready reference for the various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). It is released quarterly, that is, every February, May, August, and November.

Concepts and Definitions

Volume of production refers to the number of tended/raised cattle disposed for slaughter including animals shipped-out for slaughter. This is expressed in metric tons, liveweight.

Inventory refers to the actual number of cattle present in the farm as of a specific reference date.

Farmgate price refers to the price received by raisers for their produce at the location of farm. Thus, marketing costs, such as the transport and other marketing costs (if any) incurred in selling the produce, are not included in the farmgate prices. The 2020 to 2021 farmgate prices included in this special release were sourced from the Price Statistics Division (PSD), while the 2022 farmgate prices were based on the surveys of Livestock and Poultry Statistics Division (LPSD).
