Number of Establishments 
The 2008 Annual Survey of Philippine Business Industry covered a total 
of 136 fishing establishments with total employment of 20 and over in 
operation in the country. Most of these establishments were engaged in the 
following industries:

  • Ocean and coastal fishing, 92 establishments (67.6%)
  • Operation of fish farms and nurseries, 20 establishments (14.7%)
  • Prawn culture, 13 establishments (9.6%)

(Figure 1 shows the distribution of fishing establishments with total 
employment of 20 and over by industry group.)

Employment 
Fishing establishments with total employment of 20 and over reported a 
total of 17,277 workers in 2008. Bulk of the workers were employed in the 
following industries:

  • Ocean and coastal fishing, 14,306 workers (82.8%)
  • Operation of fish farms and nurseries 1,214 workers (7.0%)
  • Pearl culture and pearl shell gathering with 907 workers (5.2%)

total employment of 20 and over by industry group.)

Value of Output

In terms of value of output, fishing establishments with total employment 
of 20 and over generated a total of PhP12.7 billion in 2008. The leading 
industries are :

  • Ocean and coastal fishing with output value of PhP10.2 billion(80.2%)
  • Operation of fish farms and nurseries, PhP1.3 billion (10.3%)
  • Prawn culture, PhP0.7 billion (5.2%)

(Figure 3 shows the percentage distribution of value of output for fishing 
establishment with total employment of 20 and over by industry group.)

Gross Addition to Fixed Assets 
Gross addition to fixed assets of fishing establishments with total 
employment of 20 and over reached PhP360.6 million in 2008. The industries 
with the highest gross addition to fixed assets are :

  • Ocean and coastal fishing, PhP220.7 million (61.2%)
  • Operation of fish farms and nurseries, PhP68.8 million (19.1%)
  • Prawn culture with output value of PhP47.4 million (13.2%)
