Updates on April-June 2023 Palay and Corn Estimates, 01 May 2023

HIGHLIGHTS

Based on standing crop as of 01 May 2023, the estimated palay production for the period of April to June 2023 may be higher than its recorded level in April to June 2022. On the other hand, corn production may decrease compared with the April to June 2022 output. 

PALAY 
1. The estimated palay production for April to June 2023 may increase to 4.26 million metric tons or by 1.4 percent based on standing crop as of 01 May 2023 from the 4.20 million metric tons actual output in the same period of 2022. On the other hand, the updated estimate of palay production as of 01 May 2023 for the period of April to June 2023 showed a decline of -0.4 percent from its estimate of 4.28 million metric tons as of 01 April 2023. (Figure 1 and Table 1)

2. The estimated harvest area for the period of April to June 2023 may increase to 961.14 thousand hectares or by 0.8 percent based on standing crop from 953.31 thousand hectares of actual harvested area in the same period of 2022. Based on standing crop, the yield per hectare of palay for the period of April to June 2023 may increase to 4.43 metric tons or by 0.5 percent from 4.41 metric tons actual estimate in the same period of the previous year. (Table 1)

3. As of 01 May 2023, about 603.24 thousand hectares or 62.8 percent of the 961.14 thousand hectares updated harvest area of standing crop have been harvested with an actual production of 2.76 million metric tons. (Tables 1 and 2)

4. The total area yet to be harvested was 357.90 thousand hectares as of 01 May 2023. About 69.7 percent of standing palay were at the maturing stage, 28.9 percent at the reproductive stage, and 1.4 percent at the vegetative stage. (Figure 2 and Table 3)

CORN
1. Based on standing crop as of 01 May 2023, the updated corn production for the period of April to June 2023 may decrease to 1.46 million metric tons or by -1.7 percent from its actual estimate of 1.48 million metric tons in the same period of 2022. Similarly, the updated estimate of corn production as of 01 May 2023 based on standing crop registered a decline of -1.0 percent from the 1.47 million metric tons record as of 01 April 2023. (Figure 3 and Table 4)

2. Harvest area for the period of April to June 2023 may decrease to 409.00 thousand hectares or by -2.6 percent based on standing crop from 419.99 thousand hectares actual estimate of harvest area in the same period of the previous year. Yield per hectare may increase to 3.57 metric tons or by 0.9 percent based on standing crop from 3.53 metric tons actual estimate of yield per hectare in the same period of the previous year. (Table 4)

3. About 234.35 thousand hectares or 57.3 percent of the 409.00 thousand hectares updated harvest area of standing crop have been harvested as of 01 May 2023, which records an actual production of 969.24 thousand metric tons. (Tables 4 and 5)

4. Of the total area of 174.66 thousand hectares standing corn yet to be harvested as of 01 May 2023, 59.2 percent were at the maturing stage, 33.9 percent at the reproductive stage, and 6.9 percent were at the vegetative stage. (Figure 4 and Table 6)
