Month-on-Month Growth Rates

  • Philippines

  • The month-on-month change of the seasonally adjusted CPI for all items at the national level went up to 0.2 percent in January from 0.1 percent in December. Likewise, the monthly growth rates of the seasonally adjusted CPI for recreation and culture and education correspondingly grew to 0.8 percent and 0.4 percent from 0.2 percent last month. While the increments of the seasonally adjusted CPI for clothing and footwear; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; and restaurants and miscellaneous goods and services remained at 0.2 percent, that for the furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house was zero. A negative rate was however posted in the seasonally adjusted CPI for alcoholic beverages and tobacco at -0.1 percent from 0.2 percent and health, -0.3 percent from 0.3 percent.

Seasonal factors such as the practice of implementing business changes during the beginning of the year like increasing rental rates did not push up the index for housing, water, electricity and other fuels relative to the expected trend.

  • National Capital Region (NCR)

  • In NCR, movement of the seasonally adjusted CPI for non-food picked up to 0.9 percent in January from -0.1 percent in December. The seasonally adjusted CPI for transport and education similarly rose to 0.3 percent. The monthly growth of the seasonally adjusted CPI for alcoholic beverages and tobacco and furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house items remained at their corresponding previous month’s rates of 0.2 percent and 0.1 percent.

Seasonal factors did not push up the group’s indexes for non-food during the month.

  • Areas Outside the National Capital Region (AONCR)

  • The seasonally adjusted CPI for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels and education correspondingly picked up to 0.5 percent and 0.4 percent in January from their respective December rates of zero growth and 0.3 percent. From 0.3 percent growth, the increase in the seasonally adjusted CPI for recreation and culture however slowed down to 0.1 percent. While the seasonally adjusted CPI for alcoholic beverages and tobacco had a zero growth, negative month-on-month changes were noticed in the group’s indexes for clothing and footwear; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of house; health; and restaurants and miscellaneous goods and services.
