The 2023 Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21) Spring Meetings has successfully concluded on 22 March 2023 in Basel, Switzerland.

In partnership with the Swiss Federal Statistical Office’s Unlocking the Power of Data Initiative and the Canton of Basel-Stadt, the conference served as a platform for delegates to unpack concerns on the global status of data and statistics. Additionally, discussions on how local data systems can aid in nation development through its utilization in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and humanitarian crisis response featured prominently in the presentations.

The event featured a series of in-person panel sessions that brought together policymakers, national and local statistical experts, private sector representatives, international organizations, and world leaders.

Among the online attendees was Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Assistant National Statistician Kristine Joy S. Briones of the Community-Based Statistics Service, who participated online. During one of the sessions, she talked about sustainability of data and stressed the importance of going beyond the collection of data by working alongside local government units to ensure the maximum use of information for the benefit of the Filipino people.

“The PSA does not only provide the data to the local government units, we [also] help them understand the data, and provide capacity building and trainings on how to incorporate the data in their policies and programs,” she forwarded.

PARIS21 is an independent partnership of statistical professionals, policy makers, development researchers, and private sector data experts focused on improving the use of data for effective decision-making and sustainable progress. Its work has helped countries improve their data management systems and produce more holistic data that support evidence-based policies and programs, leading to people-centered development.

The PSA expresses its appreciation to PARIS21 for its commitment in supporting the Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS) advocacy and vision of a mass-oriented governance where no one is left behind.
