Value of Production Index posts a negative growth rate in November 2019
Based on the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI), the Value of Production Index (VaPI) continued to decline, which reflected an annual drop of 5.8 percent in November 2019. During the same month of the previous year, the VaPI increased by 2.3 percent.
Among the nine major industry groups that reported decreases in VaPI, five major industry groups had two-digit decreases, namely: basic metals (-36.2%), petroleum products (-25.6%), miscellaneous manufactures (-20.7%), transport equipment (-20.6%) and electrical machinery (-16.6%). Refer to Tables 1 and 1-A.
- Volume of Production Index further declines
The Volume of Production Index (VoPI) likewise dropped by 6.1 percent in November 2019. During the same period of the previous year, its annual growth rate was 1.9 percent.
The decline in VoPI was mainly influenced by the decreases in the indices of eight major industry groups led by furniture and fixtures (-41.2%), basic metals (-29.5%), miscellaneous manufactures (-22.1%), petroleum products (-21.8%), transport equipment (-16.7%) and electrical machinery (-13.0%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales Index drops
The Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) went down by 3.5 percent in November 2019. It posted a two-digit annual growth of 10.7 percent in November 2018.
The slowdown was mainly due to the annual decreases in the indices of 12 major industry groups led by basic metals (-17.7%) and miscellaneous manufactures (-13.1%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales Index also contracts
Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) exhibited an annual drop of 3.9 percent in November 2019, from a two-digit growth of 10.3 percent in the same month of the previous year.
Eight major industry groups pulled down the VoNSI which was led by furniture and fixtures (-43.0%) and miscellaneous manufactures (-14.6%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
Average Capacity Utilization Rate is highest for petroleum products
Average capacity utilization rate for total manufacturing in November 2019 was posted at 84.5 percent. Twelve (60.0%) of the 20 major industries had at least 80 percent capacity utilization rates during the month. These were:
- petroleum products (89.9%)
- basic metals (88.3%)
- non-metallic mineral products (86.5%)
- machinery except electrical (86.3%)
- food manufacturing (85.4%)
- chemical products (85.1%)
- electrical machinery (85.0%)
- printing (84.5%)
- paper and paper products (84.0%)
- rubber and plastic products (83.2%)
- wood and wood products (82.1%)
- textiles (80.2%)
Refer to Table 6.
More than a quarter of total manufacturing establishments operate at full capacity
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was more than a quarter (26.7%) of the total number of establishments for manufacturing in November 2019. More than half (54.4%) of the total establishments during the month operated at 70 percent to 89 percent capacity, while almost one-fifth (18.9%) operated below 70 percent capacity. Refer to Table B.
