GWPI

1. GWPI for the Philippines expanded in September 2022

The annual growth rate of GWPI at the national level went up to 8.2 percent in September 2022, from 7.6 percent in August 2022. Its annual change in September 2021 was recorded at 3.3 percent. (Tables A and 1a)

The increase was primarily brought about by the higher annual uptick in the index for chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats at 5.1 percent, from 2.7 percent in August 2022. In addition, annual increments were higher in the indices of the following commodity groups in September 2022:

a. Food, 12.9 percent;
b. Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, 38.9 percent;
c. Manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 4.3 percent; and
d. Miscellaneous manufactured articles, 3.3 percent.

Moreover, the annual decline in the index of crude materials, inedible except fuels at -4.8 percent was lower compared with its annual drop of -5.8 percent in August 2022.

On the other hand, annual increases eased in the indices for beverages and tobacco and machinery and transport equipment at 8.4 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively. (Table 1a)

2. GWPI in Luzon also increased during the month

Similar with the trend of the national level, the annual growth rate of GWPI in Luzon picked up to 8.5 percent in September 2022, from an annual rate of 8.0 percent in August 2022. Annual growth rate in September 2021 was lower at 3.4 percent. (Tables A and 2a)

The 4.9 percent increase in chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats primarily caused the uptrend in the GWPI in Luzon. In addition, higher annual upticks were recorded in the indices of the following commodity groups:

a. Food, 13.5 percent;
b. Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, 40.5 percent;
c. Manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 4.5 percent; and
d. Miscellaneous manufactured articles, 3.7 percent.

Moreover, the negative annual rate of -5.4 percent registered in the index of crude materials, inedible except fuels in September 2022 was lower relative to its annual drop of -6.6 percent in August 2022.

On the other hand, annual increases eased in the indices for beverages and tobacco at 8.1 percent and machinery and transport equipment,
1.2 percent. (Table 2a)

3. Higher annual increment was recorded in the GWPI in Visayas in September 2022

The annual change of GWPI in Visayas rose at the rate of 6.9 percent in September 2022, from 6.2 percent in August 2022. Its annual growth rate was observed at 0.4 percent in September 2021. (Tables A and 3a)

The food index recorded an annual growth of 11.6 percent in September 2022, primarily driving the annual increment in the GWPI of Visayas. In addition, positive year-on-year change were observed in the indices of the following commodity groups:

a. Beverages and tobacco, 8.9 percent;
b. Chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats, 7.7 percent; and
c. Manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 1.7 percent.

Meanwhile, slower annual increment was observed in the index of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials at 31.1 percent. An annual drop was still noted in the index of miscellaneous manufactured articles at -0.7 percent.

The annual growth rates remained at their respective August 2022 rates for the indices of crude materials, inedible except fuels at 0.3 percent and machinery and transport equipment at 0.4 percent. (Table 3a)

4. GWPI in Mindanao picked up slowly in September 2022

The annual hike of GWPI in Mindanao eased to 4.0 percent in September 2022, from an annual rate of 4.3 percent in August 2022. Its annual change in September 2021 was recorded at 4.9 percent. (Tables A and 4a)

The lower annual growth in GWPI in Mindanao was primarily brought about by the downtrend in food index at 4.7 percent in September 2022. Moreover, compared with their annual rates in August 2022, slower annual increments were posted in the indices of crude materials, inedible except fuels at 1.7 percent and mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials at 13.5 percent.

Meanwhile, annual increases were higher in the indices of beverages and tobacco and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials at 12.4 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively.

The rest of the commodity groups retained their respective August 2022 annual growth rates. (Table 4a)
