Year-on-Year

The year-on-year growth of the General Wholesale Price Index (GWPI) at the national level further moved up to 2.9 percent in October from 2.2 percent in September. It resulted from the higher annual rate in the food index at 3.2 percent in October from 1.6 percent in September; crude materials, inedible except fuels index, 8.7 percent from 4.2 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index, 1.0 percent from 0.7 percent; chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats index, 2.5 percent from 2.0 percent; and machinery and transport equipment index, 1.1 percent from 1.0 percent. Meanwhile, the miscellaneous manufactured articles index recorded a slower annual growth of 1.3 percent from 1.4 percent last month. Annual movements in the indices of beverages and tobacco and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials remained at their respective previous month’s rates of 25.6 percent and 1.2 percent.

  • The GWPI in Luzon followed the same trend with that of the national level as its annual increment went up 2.3 percent in October from 1.5 percent in September. This can be attributed to the 1.6 percent gain in the food index from a decline of 0.2 percent last month. In addition, a faster annual uptick was registered in crude materials, inedible except fuels index at 11.2 percent from 6.3 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related material index, 1.0 percent from 0.9 percent; chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats index, 2.7 percent from 2.1 percent; and machinery and transport equipment index, 0.8 percent from 0.7 percent. Meanwhile, the annual hike in miscellaneous manufactured articles index improved to 1.0 percent from 1.1 percent. Those for the other commodity groups remained at their previous month’s rate.

  • Similarly, the annual movement in GWPI in Visayas rose 2.0 percent in October from 1.6 percent in September as a higher annual addition was noted in the heavily-weighted food index at 2.7 percent from 1.7 percent. On the other hand, the annual change in crude materials, inedible except fuels index went down by 9.4 percent from -14.6 percent and mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index, -1.1 percent from -0.7 percent. Meanwhile, the corresponding annual hikes in the indices of chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials eased to 2.0 percent and 0.8 percent from 2.1 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively. The same previous month’s rates were observed in the indices of beverages and tobacco (25.7%), machinery and transport equipment (0.4%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (1.0%).

  • In Mindanao, the GWPI inched up 8.9 percent in October from 8.7 percent in September. The annual growth in the food index grew by 15.6 percent from 15.1 percent and mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index, 2.1 percent from 1.1 percent. A slower annual rate was however posted in crude materials, inedible except fuels index at 7.9 percent from 10.6 percent; manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index, 3.3 percent from 3.7 percent; and machinery and transport equipment index, 3.4 percent from 3.6 percent. The rest of the commodity groups retained their last month’s rate.

  • By Commodity Group, Month-on-Month

Measured from a month ago level, wholesale prices of commodities in the country decreased by 0.2 percent in October from 1.0 percent growth in September. The index of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials dropped by 1.6 percent in October from a positive monthly rate of 1.9 percent in September. Moreover, the food index went up at a slower rate of 0.6 percent from 1.0 percent; crude materials, inedible except fuels index, 0.7 percent from 4.7 percent; and chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats index, 0.1 percent from 0.8 percent. The machinery and transport equipment index moved at its last month’s rate of 0.1 percent. The other commodity groups remained stable as they registered a zero growth.

Rollbacks in the prices of gasoline, kerosene and LPG pushed down the mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index in Luzon by 1.8 percent and in Visayas, -0.7 percent. On the other hand, add-ons in the prices of lubricating oil and diesel oil were registered in Mindanao thereby raising its group’s index by 1.0 percent. At the national level, the group’s index fell by 1.6 percent from 1.9 percent.

Prices of copra were higher in Visayas and Luzon. Thus, the crude materials, inedible except fuels index in the two areas advanced by 3.4 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively. Price mark-ups in abaca were also noticed in Luzon. In Mindanao, price gains in gravel raised its group’s index by 0.2 percent. The group’s index in the Philippines moved up by 0.7 percent, slower than the 4.7 percent increase last month.

The index for food in Luzon rose 0.9 percent and in Visayas, 0.2 percent. This was due to price add-ons in some food items like off-season fruits, vegetables and selected fish species in the two areas. Upward movements were also seen in the prices of chicken, calamansi and copra in Luzon. However, the group’s index in Mindanao declined by 0.5 percent as lower prices of rice, beef and some condiments were observed during the month. In the Philippines, the group’s index picked up 0.6 percent.

Price hikes in coconut oil resulted to a 0.1 percent growth in chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats index in Luzon and at the national level. Meanwhile, prices of chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats in Visayas and Mindanao generally remained stable during the month.

Higher prices of some electrical apparatus and electrical fixtures were noted in Luzon during the month. Thus, the machinery and transport equipment index in the area grew by 0.1 percent. On the other hand, downward adjustments in the prices of some electrical appliances in Mindanao pushed down its group’s index by 0.2 percent while in Visayas, no movement was seen in the group’s index. These mixed price trends effected a 0.1 percent uptick in the group’s index in the Philippines.

Lower prices of cement and selected rubber products were noticed in Visayas. Hence, the manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index in the area went down by 0.2 percent. In Luzon and Mindanao, prices of manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials generally remained stable as the index had a zero growth. No movement was recorded in the group’s national index.

The indices of miscellaneous manufactured articles and beverages and tobacco in the four areas had a zero growth during the period.
