    The month-on-month inflation rate of the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) went up to 0.6 percent in August from 0.1 percent in July. A higher price increase was noted in the heavily weighted food index at 0.3 percent in August from 0.1 percent in July; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 4.6 percent and 0.8 percent from zero growth; machinery and transport equipment, 0.3 percent from 0.1 percent and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 0.6 percent from 0.3 percent. Prices of crude materials, inedible except fuels remained stable as its index posted a zero growth. The beverage and tobacco index retained its previous rate of 0.2 percent while the index of chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats recorded a movement of -0.2 percent.

    Upward adjustments were observed in the prices of fish, vegetables, sugar, gasoline, kerosene and tires. Higher prices of construction materials such as lumber, plywood, cement, steel bars, nails and sand paper were also noted. Moreover, price hikes in sanitary plumbing fixtures and fittings, footwear and wrist watch also contributed to the uptrend.

    On an annual basis, the GRPI in NCR still continued to register a negative rate at -2.0 percent in August from -2.8 percent in July. The index of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials groups still posted negative annual rates. Slowdowns were registered in beverages and tobacco index at 3.3 percent in August from 4.0 percent in July; crude materials, inedible except fuels, 2.1 percent from 3.2 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 3.6 percent from 3.7 percent. On the other hand, the indexes for food and machinery and transport equipment correspondingly increased to 1.7 percent and 1.2 percent from 1.4 and 0.9 percent, respectively.
