The 17th Faculty-Student Conference on Statistical Sciences (SFCON) joins the 13th National Convention on Statistics (NCS). The one-day conference will be held on the first day of the NCS on 03 October 2016 at the Edsa Shangri-la Hotel in Mandaluyong City.  

 

The Faculty-Student Conference on Statistical Sciences is jointly organized by the University of the Philippines Diliman School of Statistics (UPSS), the University of the Philippines Los Baños Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) and the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI).  

 

From its humble beginnings, the first conference was organized by the UPSS in 1998 with only a handful of papers and relatively few participants. Since then, it has transformed into a highly successful national conference on statistical sciences for faculty, undergraduate and graduate students of statistics and related fields.  

 

One of the defining moments in the history of this conference happened in 2003 when the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) of the UPLB joined the UP School of Statistics to alternately host the conference, with INSTAT hosting during odd years and School of Statistics during even years. The joint undertaking was made possible by the cooperation agreement between retired UPSS Professor and conference founder Dr. Adolfo de Guzman, the late Dr. Terry Solivas of INSTAT, and former UPSS dean and now National Statistician Dr. Lisa Grace S. Bersales of the PSA. The success of the conference is credited to the genuine and strong commitment of three different institutions: UPSS, INSTAT and PSRTI which are dedicated to continuous research and development in statistics and related fields. 

 

This year’s conference theme “Sustainable Development: Making Statistics Count” will particularly highlight the importance of statistics in the everyday life of Filipinos and how available data resources can contribute in finding processes and solutions that will bring everyone to a better state in the future.

 

It is expected that about 200 faculty and students nationwide will join the Faculty-Student Conference and approximately 20 paper presentations will be presented during the conference.
