·  Value of Production maintains its negative growth in June 2007

Value of Production Index (VaPI) in June 2007 for the manufacturing industry fell at a slower rate as it posted a 3.4 percent decrease compared with the year-ago figure, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Eight (8) out of 20 major sectors reported two-digit decreases as observed in the following sectors: textiles, basic metals, machinery excluding electrical, tobacco, miscellaneous manufactures, furniture and fixtures, petroleum products and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1 .

However, VaPI on a month-on-month basis posted an increase of 1.7 percent in June 2007. This was primarily due to the two-digit increases in production values observed for wood and wood products, leather products and food manufacturing. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

·  Volume of Production Index also maintains its negative rate

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) on a year-on-year basis dropped at a slower rate of 4.7 percent in June 2007. Eleven (11) major sectors contributed to the decline in production output, with two-digit decreases observed in the following: textiles, basic metals, machinery excluding electrical, tobacco and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

Meanwhile, VoPI on a month-on-month basis posted an increase of 1.4 percent in June 2007. Significant expansions in factory output were noted in the following major sectors: wood and wood products, leather products, rubber products and food manufacturing. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

·  Value of Net Sales sustains positive growth in June 2007

Value of Net Sales on a year-on-year performance continued to grow at a slower rate of 0.7 percent in June 2007. Eight (8) of the 20 major sectors reported two-digit increases in sales value as observed in the following: tobacco, beverages, wood and wood products, transport equipment, chemical products, fabricated metal products, rubber products and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

Likewise, Value of Net Sales on a month-on-month comparison grew by 1.8 percent in June 2007. Thirteen (13) of the 20 major sectors posted growth in sales, with two-digit increases observed in the following: miscellaneous manufactures, chemical products and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

·  Volume of Net Sales still maintains its negative growth

Volume of Net Sales on a year-on-year comparison dropped by 1.2 percent in June 2007. This was brought about by poor sales performance of ten (10) major sectors with significant two-digit decreases reported by the following: leather products, basic metals, textiles, machinery excluding electrical, footwear and wearing apparel, electrical machinery and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

On the other hand, Volume of Net Sales on a month-on-month basis gained by 1.3 percent in June 2007. This was brought about by increases in sales volume registered by 12 of the 20 major sectors, led by miscellaneous manufactures. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

·  Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in June 2007 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.2 percent. Major sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, leather products, miscellaneous manufactures, petroleum products, paper and paper products, electrical machinery, basic metals, rubber products, chemical products and food manufacturing. Refer to Table 6. .

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 10.9 percent in June 2007. More than half or 55.5 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity and 33.6 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

·  Technical Notes

Starting 2006, weights for the Producer Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
