The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) will conduct the 2018 Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI) from 03 April to 31 July 2019 covering 65,000 establishments nationwide.

The CPBI is undertaken every five years to collect and generate information on the levels, structure, performance and trends of economic activities of the formal sector of the economy. The results of the CPBI serve as benchmark information in the measurement of national and regional economic growth. Data to be collected from the CPBI will constitute bases upon which the government and the private sector can formulate policies and programs geared towards economic development.

Specifically, the 2018 CPBI aims to:

  • collect and generate information on employment, revenue, expense, capital expenditures and total assets of the establishments by industry and by region;
  • generate indicators such as value added, labor productivity, profitability and other indicators which are necessary for the evaluation of the performance of industries at the national and regional levels;
  • generate information on MSMEs (micro, small, and medium establishments/enterprises);
  • generate gender disaggregated statistics on employment;
  • generate statistics on research and development (R&D) expenditures of establishments; and,
  • update basic information of establishments and enterprise for the improvement of the Statistical Business Register (SBR).

The census will utilize a budget amounting to Php 101.4 million to cover maintenance and other operating expenses such as wages of job order personnel / statistical researchers, travelling expenses, supplies, printing, and training.

The preliminary results of the 2018 CPBI will be posted on the PSA website in July 2020 while final results will be released in October 2020. National and regional dissemination is scheduled to be held in December 2020.

The census was reviewed and cleared for conduct under the SSRCS, a mechanism being implemented by the PSA by virtue of Rule 28 of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of RA No. 10625 to:

  • ensure sound design for data collection;
  • minimize the burden placed upon respondents;
  • effect economy in statistical data collection;
  • eliminate unnecessary duplication of statistical data collection efforts; and
  • achieve better coordination of government statistical activities.

In line with this, the PSA enjoins all business establishments to support the said census.
