  • The population of Region XIII (Caraga) as of August 1, 2015 was 2,596,709 based on the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN 2015).

  • The 2015 population of the region is higher by 167,485 compared with the population of 2.43 million in 2010, and by 501,342 compared with the population of 2.10 million in 2000.  Refer to Table 1.
  • The population of Region XIII increased by 1.28 percent annually, on average, during the period 2010 to 2015. By comparison, the rate at which the region’s population grew during the period 2000 to 2010 was higher at 1.49 percent. See Table 2.

  • Among the five provinces comprising the region, Agusan del Sur had the biggest population in 2015 with 701 thousand, followed by Surigao del Sur with 592 thousand, Surigao del Norte with 485 thousand, and Agusan del Norte (excluding Butuan City) with 355 thousand. Dinagat Islands had the smallest population with 127 thousand. Refer to Table 3.
  • Butuan City, the only highly urbanized city in the region posted a population of 337 thousand.
  • The total population of Region XIII accounted for about 2.6 percent of the Philippine population in 2015.

  • Surigao del Norte was the fastest growing province in the region with an average annual population growth rate (PGR) of 1.76 percent during the period 2010 to 2015. It was followed by Agusan del Sur with a PGR of 1.25 percent, Agusan del Norte (excluding Butuan City) (1.23 percent), and Surigao del Sur (1.03 percent). Dinagat Islands posted the lowest provincial PGR of 0.05 percent. See Table 4.
  • Butuan City posted a PGR of 1.62 percent.

  • Region XIII is composed of one highly urbanized city, five component cities, 67 municipalities, and 1,311 barangays.
  • Among the cities (excluding Butuan City) and municipalities in the region, the largest in terms of population size is Surigao City, Surigao del Norte with 154,137 persons. It was followed by the City of Bayugan, Agusan del Sur (103,202) and the City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur (94,535). Refer to Table 5.

  • Burgos in Surigao del Norte is the least populous city/municipality in Region XIII with 4,034 persons. It was followed by two other municipalities in Surigao del Norte - San Benito (5,404) and San Isidro (7,325). See Table 6.

  • Of the 1,311 barangays in Region XIII, the largest in terms of population size is Mangagoy in the City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur with 32,464 persons. It was followed by Libertad in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte with 21,703 persons and Washington (Pob.) in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte (18,900). Refer to Table 7.
