Total population increased by 37.1 percent

The province of Sulu had a total population of 849,670 persons as of August 1, 2007. This count is higher by 37.1 percent compared with the census count of 619,668 persons as of May 1, 2000. The increase in population count for the period 2000 to 2007 translated to an annual population growth rate of 4.45 percent.

Likewise, the household population of Sulu increased by 37.1 percent from 619,550 persons in 2000 to 849,386 persons in 2007. The number of households grew by 48.5 percent, from 98,151 households in 2000 to 145,728 households in 2007. The average household size in 2007 was 5.8 persons, lower than the average household size of 6.3 persons in 2000.

 

Municipality of Jolo had the highest population count

Among the 19 municipalities in Sulu, the municipality of Jolo, the provincial capital, was the biggest in terms of population size in 2007. It accounted for 16.5 percent of the total population of the province. It was followed by the municipalities of Talipao (10.1 percent) and Indanan (10.0 percent). In 2000, the municipality of Siasi ranked third in terms of population size. The municipality of Hadji Panglima Tahil (Marunggas), meanwhile, remained the least populated in both 2000 and 2007 censuses.

Sex ratio was 98 males per 100 females

Of the 849,386 household population in 2007, females accounted for 50.5 percent while males comprised 49.5 percent. These figures resulted in a sex ratio of 98 males for every 100 females, higher than the sex ratio of 96 males per 100 females recorded in 2000.

Median age decreased to 18 years

In 2007, the median age of the household population in the province was 18 years, which means that half of the household population was younger than 18 years old. The median age computed in 2000 was 19 years.

Children aged 5 to 9 years comprised the largest age group, making up 14.6 percent of the total household population, followed by age groups 10 to 14 years (13.7 percent) and 15 to 19 years (12.2 percent). These three age groups combined accounted for 40.5 percent of the household population. On the other hand, the proportion of age group 0 to 5 years was lower (11.4 percent) compared to the three age groups.

 

Males and females were equally distributed in age group 10 to 14 years. Males outnumbered females in age group 40 years and over. Females, on the other hand, outnumbered males in age group 0 to 39 years.

More than half of the household population were of voting age

The voting-age population (18 years old and over) of Sulu was 446,341 in 2007, accounting for 52.5 percent of the household population. In 2000, the voting-age population was 334,952, or 54.1 percent of the household population. Females (50.8 percent) outnumbered males (49.2 percent) in the total voting-age population in 2007.

Dependency ratio increased to 70 dependents per 100 persons in the working age group

Nearly three-fifths (58.8 percent) of the household population belonged to the working-age population (15 to 64 years). Young dependents (under 15 years) comprised 39.7 percent while old dependents (65 years and over) accounted for 1.4 percent.

The overall dependency ratio of the household population in the province in 2007 was 70, up from 64 dependents per 100 persons in the working age group in 2000. This means that for every 100 persons in the working-age population in 2007, there were 70 dependents (68 young dependents and 2 old dependents).

More males among never-married persons

Of the household population 10 years old and over, 50.4 percent were never married while 45.5 percent were married. The remaining 4.1 percent were either widowed, divorced/separated, had common law/live-in marital arrangement, or had unknown marital status.

A higher proportion of males (50.1 percent) than females (49.9 percent) was observed among never-married persons in 2007. Meanwhile, the proportion of females was higher compared to that of males among married (50.3 percent), widowed (67.6 percent), divorced/separated (58.0 percent), and persons in common law/live-in marital arrangement (50.9 percent).

More males pursued post baccalaureate courses

About 39 percent of the household population 5 years old and over had attended or completed elementary education, 21.9 percent had reached or finished high school, 7.0 percent were college undergraduates, and 3.5 percent were academic degree holders.

Among those with academic degrees, there were more females (51.9 percent) than males (48.1 percent). However, more males (54.0 percent) pursued post baccalaureate courses than females (46.0 percent).

More than three-fifths of the household population 5 to 24 years old attended school

Of the household population 5 to 24 years old, 62.9 percent had attended school at anytime during School Year 2007 to 2008. The rate of school attendance was equal among males and among females (each recorded 62.9 percent) during the said school year.

Occupied housing units increased by 50.7 percent

In 2007, there were 144,183 occupied housing units in Sulu. This is 50.7 percent higher than the 95,662 occupied housing units recorded in 2000. A ratio of 101 households per 100 occupied housing units was computed in 2007, lower than the ratio of 103 households per 100 occupied housing units reported in 2000. Moreover, the number of persons per occupied housing unit was 5.9 persons in 2007, lower than the ratio of 6.5 persons per occupied housing unit in 2000.

Most occupied housing units used light materials for outer walls and roofs

The majority (64.8 percent) of the occupied housing units in Sulu had outer walls made of bamboo/sawali/cogon/nipa, while 57.2 percent had roofs made of cogon/nipa/anahaw in 2007. The same construction materials for the outer walls and roofs were also most commonly used in 2000.
