- Value of Production Index decelerates in October 2019
Based on the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI), the Value of Production Index (VaPI) fell by 4.3 percent in October 2019. During the same month of the previous year, the VaPI increased by 4.1 percent.
Among the nine major industries that exhibited declines in VaPI, five major industries had two-digit decreases, namely: petroleum products (-25.6%), miscellaneous manufactures (-22.3%), electrical machinery (-20.4%), basic metals (-13.5%) and textiles (-10.8%). Refer to Tables 1 and 1-A.
- Volume of Production Index likewise contracts
The Volume of Production Index (VoPI) declined by 3.7 percent in October 2019. During the same period of the previous year, its annual growth rate was 2.9 percent.
The decline of VoPI in October 2019 can be attributed to the decreases in the indices of nine major industry groups led by furniture and fixtures (-32.0%), miscellaneous manufactures (-23.0%), petroleum products (-17.5%) and electrical machinery (-17.3%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales Index slightly decreases
The Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) reflected a year-on-year decrement of 2.1 percent in October 2019, from a two-digit growth of 12.5 percent in October 2018.
Ten major industry groups pulled down the VaNSI which was led by leather products (-29.5%), basic metals (-17.5%), miscellaneous manufactures (-12.2%), textiles (-11.1%), food manufacturing (-11.0%), electrical machinery (-10.4%) and petroleum products (-10.0%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales Index slips
Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) slipped to 1.5 percent in October 2019, from a two-digit growth of 11.1 percent in the same month of the previous year.
The decline of VoNSI in October 2019 can be attributed to the decreases in the indices of 10 major industry groups led by furniture and fixtures (-30.0%), miscellaneous manufactures (-13.0%) and leather products (-11.7%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Average Capacity Utilization Rate is highest for petroleum products
Average capacity utilization rate for total manufacturing in October 2019 was posted at 84.5 percent. Twelve (60.0%) of the 20 major industries had at least 80 percent capacity utilization rates during the month. These were:
- petroleum products (89.9%)
- basic metals (88.4%)
- machinery except electrical (86.5%)
- non-metallic mineral products (86.5%)
- food manufacturing (85.3%)
- chemical products (85.2%)
- electrical machinery (85.0%)
- printing (84.5%)
- paper and paper products (84.1%)
- rubber and plastic products (83.3%)
- wood and wood products (82.2%)
- textiles (80.2%)
Refer to Table 6.
- More than a quarter of total manufacturing establishments operate at full capacity
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was more than a quarter (27.2%) of the total number of establishments for manufacturing in October 2019. About 54.0 percent of the total establishments during the month operated at 70 percent to 89 percent capacity, while almost one-fifth (18.8%) operated below 70 percent capacity. Refer to Table B.
