- Value of Production Index slips in January 2019
The Value of Production Index (VaPI) for manufacturing decreased at an annual rate of 0.7 percent in January 2019. During the same month of the previous year, the annual growth rate of VaPI was higher at 10.9 percent.
The decrease in VaPI was brought about by the 11 industry groups led by basic metals with two-digit drop of 13.5 percent. Refer to Tables1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production Index decreases
Volume of Production Index (VoPI) exhibited a year-on-year decrement of 4.1 percent in January 2019. In the same month of the previous year, annual growth rate was higher at 10.8 percent.
Twelve out of the 20 major industry groups registered annual declines. Major industries that significantly influenced the decrease were furniture and fixtures and basic metals, with two-digit decreases of 31.1 percent and 12.0 percent, respectively. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales Index accelerates
Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) registered a positive growth rate of 2.9 percent in January 2019. Meanwhile, higher annual increase of 9.8 percent for VaNSI was recorded during the same month of the previous year.
Among the 14 major industries that exhibited increases in VaNSI, four major industries had a two-digit growth rate, namely: wood and wood products (38.5%), beverages (28.1%), tobacco products (11.8%) and non-metallic mineral products (10.2%). Refer toTables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales Index slightly drops
The Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) went down by 0.7 percent in January 2019. As compared with the index in the same month of the previous year, it was higher at 9.7 percent.
The slowdown in VoNSI was driven by the decreases of eight major industry groups, with two-digit reduction rates noted in three major industry groups, namely: leather products (-28.3%), furniture and fixtures (-28.2%) and textiles (-20.2%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Average Capacity Utilization Rate is highest for petroleum products
Average capacity utilization rate in January 2019 for total manufacturing was recorded at 84.3 percent. Fifty-five percent or 11 of the 20 major industries operated at least 80 percent capacity utilization rates. These were:
- petroleum products (89.7%)
- basic metals (88.6%)
- non-metallic mineral products (86.3%)
- machinery except electrical (86.0%)
- food manufacturing (85.3%)
- electrical machinery (85.0%)
- chemical products (84.7%)
- paper and paper products (83.8%)
- rubber and plastic products (83.3%)
- wood and wood products (82.2%)
- textiles(80.3%)
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was more than one-fourth (27.3%) of the total number of establishments in January 2019. About 53.9 percent of the total establishments operated at 70 percent to 89 percent capacity while almost one-fifth (18.3%) operated below 70 percent capacity. Refer to Tables B and 6.
