Value of Production Index decelerates in December 2019
Based on the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI), the Value of Production Index (VaPI) showed an annual drop of 9.5 percent in December 2019. In the same month of the previous year, VaPI also went down by 9.1 percent.
The decline in VaPI was mainly influenced by the decreases in the indices of nine major industry groups led by basic metals (-50.6%), petroleum products (-48.8%) and textiles (-11.9%). Refer to Tables 1 and 1-A.
- Volume of Production Index registers two-digit decline
The Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continued to fall at an annual rate of 10.1 percent in December 2019. During the same period of the previous year, its annual rate of decrease was lower at 9.3 percent.
Petroleum products and basic metals, with 47.9 percent decrement, contributed largely to the decrease of VoPI in December 2019. Two other major industries that registered two-digit decrements in VoPI were furniture and fixtures (-30.4%) and miscellaneous manufactures (-10.5%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales Index slides down
The Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) continued to decline, reflecting an annual decrease of 3.0 percent in December 2019. During the same month of the previous year, the VaNSI decreased by 1.4 percent.
Among the 12 major industry groups that reported decreases in VaNSI, four major industry groups had two-digit decreases, namely: basic metals (-30.0%), machinery except electrical (-21.1%), footwear and wearing apparel (-13.8%) and food manufacturing (-13.0%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales Index decreases further
Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) similarly posted a year-on-year decrease of 3.6 percent in December 2019. In the same month of the previous year, VoNSI declined slower at 1.6 percent.
Ten out of the 20 major industry groups registered annual declines, with two-digit decreases noted in the following major industry groups: furniture and fixtures (-30.2%), basic metals (-26.3%), machinery except electrical (-16.5%) and food manufacturing (-11.8%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
Average Capacity Utilization Rate is highest for petroleum products
Average capacity utilization rate for total manufacturing in December 2019 was posted at 84.4 percent. Twelve of the 20 major industries had at least 80 percent capacity utilization rates during the month. These were:
- petroleum products (90.0%)
- basic metals (88.4%)
- non-metallic mineral products (86.3%)
- machinery except electrical (86.2%)
- food manufacturing (85.5%)
- chemical products (85.2%)
- electrical machinery (84.9%)
- printing (84.1%)
- paper and paper products (83.9%)
- rubber and plastic products (83.1%)
- wood and wood products (82.5%)
- textiles (80.1%)
Refer to Table 6.
More than a quarter of total manufacturing establishments operate at full capacity
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was more than a quarter (25.9%) of the total number of establishments for manufacturing in December 2019. More than half (55.2%) operated at 70 percent to 89 percent capacity, while almost one-fifth (18.9%) operated below 70 percent capacity. Refer to Table B.
