Total population increased by 12,244 persons

The population of Marinduque was 229,636 persons as of August 1, 2007, based on the 2007 Census of Population. This figure was higher by 12,244 persons over the population count of 217,392 persons in 2000. The recent population counts for the province translated to an annual population growth rate (PGR) of 0.76 percent for the period 2000 to 2007, lower than the 1.81 percent annual PGR registered for the period 1995 to 2000.

The number of households reached 49,956, or 6,035 households more than the 2000 figure. The average household size in 2007 was 4.6 persons, slightly lower than the average household size of 4.9 persons recorded in 2000.

Santa Cruz topped in terms of population size

Among the six municipalities in Marinduque, Santa Cruz was the most populated with population comprising 26.7 percent of the provincial total population. It was followed by the municipality of Boac (22.1 percent), the provincial capital. The rest of the municipalities had a share of less than 15.0 percent each: Gasan (14.7 percent), Mogpog (14.5 percent), Torrijos (12.8 percent), and Buenavista (9.2 percent).

Sex ratio remained at 102 males per 100 females

By sex, 50.4 percent of the household population were males while 49.6 percent were females, or a sex ratio of 102 males for every 100 females. A sex ratio of 102 males per 100 females was also posted in 2000.

Median age was 21 years

The household population of Marinduque had a median age of 21 years, which means that half of the household population were younger than 21 years old. This is one year higher than the median age of 20 years reported in 2000.

Children aged 10 to 14 years comprised the largest age group making up 13.5 percent of the total household population, followed closely by those in age groups 5 to 9 years (13.1 percent) and 0 to 4 years (12.9 percent).

There were more males than females in age group 0 to 29 years and age group 35 to 39 years. Females, on the other hand, outnumbered males in the age group 30 to 34 years and age group 40 years and over.

More than half of the household population were of voting ages

In 2007, the proportion of voting age group (18 years old and over) was 54.2 percent of the total household population. This is slightly lower than the voting-age population recorded in 2000 which was 54.5 percent. The distribution of voting-age population by sex in 2007 was 50.7 percent females and 49.3 percent males.

Overall dependency ratio increased to 84 dependents per 100 persons of working-age

The proportion of household population in the working age group (15 to 64 years) was 54.3 percent; young dependents (0 to 14 years) consisted 39.5 percent, while old dependents (65 years and over) comprised 6.3 percent.

The overall dependency ratio in 2007 was 84, which implies that there were 84 dependents (73 young dependents and 11 old dependents) for every 100 persons in the working age group. This is higher than the overall dependency ratio reported in 2000 at 79 dependents (70 young dependents and 9 old dependents) per 100 persons in the working age group.

More never-married males than females

Nearly half (48.4 percent) of the household population 10 years old and over in 2007 were married while 41.6 percent were never married. Ten percent of the population were in the remaining marital status categories, that is, widowed (6.1 percent), divorced/separated (0.7 percent), had common law/live-in marital arrangement (3.1 percent), and with unknown marital status (0.2 percent). Among never-married persons, males accounted for 56.2 percent while females comprised 43.8 percent. Females outnumbered males in the rest of the categories for marital status.

Females outnumbered males at higher levels of education

Of the household population 5 years old and over, 45.2 percent had attended or finished elementary education, 30.6 percent had reached or completed high school, while 4.9 percent were college undergraduates. The proportion of academic degree holders, meanwhile, increased from 3.9 percent in 2000 to 6.3 percent in 2007.

More females than males pursued higher levels of education as 60.1 percent of females were reported to have academic degrees and 69.6 percent had taken post baccalaureate courses.

Higher school attendance among females than among males

Among household population 5 to 24 years old, 74.6 percent had attended school at anytime during School Year 2007 to 2008. Of the total females aged 5 to 24 years, 76.5 percent had attended school at anytime during the said school year. School attendance for males was 72.9 percent of the total males aged 5 to 24 years.

Number of occupied housing units increased to 49,725

From a total of 43,685 occupied housing units in 2000, the number of occupied housing units rose to 49,725 in 2007. A ratio of 100 households per 100 occupied housing units was reported in 2007, slightly lower than the ratio of 101 households per 100 occupied housing units reported in 2000. In terms of the number of occupants per occupied housing unit, a ratio of 4.6 persons per occupied housing unit was recorded in 2007. This is lower compared to the ratio of 5.0 persons per occupied housing unit in 2000.

Outer walls and roofs of occupied housing units were mostly made of strong materials

In 2007, occupied housing units with outer walls made of concrete/brick/stone accounted for 36.8 percent. This was followed by those with outer walls made of half concrete/brick/stone and half wood (22.0 percent) and bamboo/sawali/cogon/nipa (21.7 percent).

About 8 in every 10 (79.3 percent) occupied housing units in 2007 had roofs made of galvanized iron/aluminum. Use of cogon/nipa/anahaw as materials for the roof decreased from 26.5 percent in 2000 to 16.3 percent in 2007.
