On an annual basis, the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) picked up by 4.3 percent in September 2018. Its annual growth in the previous month was registered at 4.1 percent and in September 2017, 3.2 percent. Higher annual increments were registered in the indices of food at 5.2 percent; chemicals, including animal and vegetable oil and fats, 1.1 percent; and machinery and transport equipment , 1.8 percent. Meanwhile, annual increases in the indices of crude materials, inedible except fuels decelerated to 1.1 percent; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, 21.8 percent; and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 2.2 percent. The rest of the commodity groups retained their previous month’s annual rates (see Table 2).

By Commodity Group, Month-on-Month

The GRPI in NCR increased by 0.9 percent in September 2018. In the previous month, its rate was recorded at 0.2 percent.

  • The heavily-weighted food index rose by 1.9 percent in September 2018. This was due to the increments in the prices of rice, pork, beef, milk, fresh fish, fruits, vegetables, sauces and sugar.

  • Higher prices of petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, LPG and kerosene raised the index of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials by 2.2 percent during the period.

  • From a 0.1 percent decline in the previous month, the index of chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats inched up by 0.1 percent in September 2018. Price increases were noted in paints, bath soap and antiseptics.

  • The index of machinery and transport equipment rose by 0.1 percent in September due to higher prices of electrical wires, conduit and PVC pipes.

  • A 0.1 percent increment in beverages and tobacco index was brought about by the price increases in liquors, wines, softdrinks and cigarettes.

  • The index for miscellaneous manufactured articles slightly inched up by 0.003 percent. Prices of some school supplies went up during the month.

  • A flat growth was seen in the indices of crude materials, inedible except fuels and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials during the in September 2018.
