Construction Materials Wholesale Price Index (CMWPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) picks up at a slower rate during the month

The annual increase of CMWPI in NCR slowed down to 3.0 percent in July 2019. Its annual rates were higher at 3.2 percent in June 2019 and 4.8 percent in July 2018. Annual declines were still observed in the indices of reinforcing and structural steel at 0.1 percent; and doors, jambs, and steel casement, 0.2 percent. Moreover, slower annual increments were posted in the indices of the following commodity groups during the month:

  • Concrete products and cement, 4.4 percent;
  • Hardware, 1.8 percent;
  • Lumber, 4.7 percent;
  • G.I. sheet, 3.7 percent;
  • Tileworks, 0.9 percent;
  • Electrical works, 3.9 percent; and
  • Plumbing fixtures and accessories/waterworks, 4.4 percent.

Meanwhile, the indices of the following commodity groups exhibited higher annual gains during the month:

  • Sand and gravel, 10.3 percent;
  • Plywood, 2.2 percent;
  • Painting works, 0.3 percent; and
  • PVC pipes, 4.1 percent.

In addition, the annual change of fuel and lubricants index rose by 1.6 percent from a drop of 0.8 percent in the previous month. The rest of the commodity groups had a zero growth during the month (see Table 2).

CMWPI in NCR drops during the period

Measured from a month ago level, the CMWPI in NCR decreased by 0.3 percent in July 2019. In June 2019, its monthly rate was posted at 0.3 percent. Declines were registered in the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Concrete products and cement, 1.8 percent;
  • Hardware, 0.2 percent;
  • Tileworks, 0.3 percent;
  • Electrical works, 0.5 percent; and
  • Plumbing fixtures and accessories/waterworks, 0.1 percent.

Also, contributing to the downtrend were the slower monthly upticks noted in the indices of lumber and G.I. sheets at 0.2 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, increments in the indices of sand and gravel were higher at 0.8 percent and PVC pipes at 3.1 percent. Moreover, from monthly declines in the previous month, the indices of plywood rose by 0.2 percent; painting works, 0.4 percent; and fuels and lubricants, 2.2 percent. Likewise, the index of reinforcing steel went up by 0.6 percent from zero growth in the previous month. The rest of the commodity groups had zero growth during the month (see Table 3).
