The annual increase of the Construction Materials Wholesale Price Index (CMWPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) slowed down to 8.4 percent in July 2018. The annual rate in June 2018 was registered at 8.8 percent and in July 2017, 1.7 percent. Slower annual increments were posted in the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Sand and Gravel, 2.2%;
  • Concrete Products, 4.3%;
  • Plywood, 2.8%;
  • Doors, Jambs, and Steel Casement, 2.8%; and
  • Fuels and Lubricants, 31.1%.

Meanwhile, other commodity groups recorded higher annual hikes except for the indices of glass and glass products, asphalt and machinery and equipment rental which remained unchanged (see Table 2).

Month-on-Month

The month-on-month change of the CMWPI in NCR dropped by 0.3 percent in July 2018. Its rate in the previous month picked up by 0.3 percent. Declines were posted in the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Concrete Products, -0.8%;
  • Cement and Fuels and Lubricants, -0.1%;
  • Plywood, -0.3%; and
  • Doors, Jambs, and Steel Casement, -0.4%

In addition, slower monthly increases were observed in the indices of sand and gravel at 0.2 percent; lumber, 0.7 percent; and electrical works, 1.0 percent. From a zero growth in the previous month, upward adjustments were registered in the indices of hardware at 0.8 percent; tileworks, 0.2 percent; and PVC pipes, 0.4 percent. The indices of G.I. sheet likewise, rose by 0.7 percent; plumbing fixtures and accessories/waterworks, 0.6 percent; and painting works, 0.4 percent after they recorded negative rates in June 2018. The rest of the commodity groups exhibited zero percent change (see Table 3).

Price decreases were noted in gasoline, diesel, concrete drainage pipe, cement, plywood and selected types of door. Meanwhile, prices of gravel, selected hardware products and electrical materials, lumber, corrugated G.I. sheets, ceramic tiles, porcelain lavatory, paints and PVC pipes were higher during the month.
