Month-on-Month Growth Rates

Philippines

     At the national level, the seasonally adjusted CPI for all items picked up by 0.2 percent in July 2019 from 0.1 percent in June 2019. Higher monthly increases were noted in the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Alcoholic beverages and tobacco (0.8% from 0.7%);
  • Clothing and footwear (0.4% from 0.2%);
  • Furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house (0.3% from 0.2%);
  • Health (0.4% from 0.3%); and
  • Education (2.1% and 0.4%).

Moreover, non-food index moved up by 0.4 percent from a zero growth in June 2019. On the other hand, the indices of recreation and culture moved at its previous month’s rates of 0.1 percent; and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, 0.3 percent. The indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages; and housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels both registered a zero growth during the month.

     The lean month of July pushed down the indices for all items and food and non-alcoholic beverages. This seasonal factor, however, pushed up the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Alcoholic beverages and tobacco;
  • Clothing and footwear;
  • Furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house;
  • Health;
  • Education; and
  • Restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services.

The indices of non-food; housing, electricity, gas, and other fuels; and recreation and culture were not affected by this seasonal factor (see Table 1).

National Capital Region (NCR)

     The month-on-month change of the seasonally adjusted CPI for alcoholic beverages and tobacco rose by 0.6 percent in July 2019, from 0.5 percent in June 2019. Moreover, the indices of furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house went up by 0.2 percent from 0.1 percent, and recreation and culture, 0.3 percent from -0.3 percent. Meanwhile, slower monthly increments were noted in the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 0.1 percent from 0.3 percent, and education, 0.8 percent from 1.3 percent. Movement of restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services index remained at 0.3 percent, while the  non-food index recorded a zero growth from 0.1 percent in the previous month.

     The lean season during the month of July pushed down the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, and recreation and culture relative to the expected trend. However, this seasonal factor pushed up the indices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; and education. The indices of non-food, and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services were not affected by this seasonal factor (see Table 2).

  • Alcoholic beverages and tobacco;
  • Clothing and footwear;
  • Furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house;
