CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS WHOLESALE PRICE INDEX IN THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION

The Construction Materials Wholesale Price Index (CMWPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) continued to move upward as it recorded a higher annual increment of 8.8 percent in June 2018. Its annual rate in the previous month was 8.0 percent and in June 2017, 1.4 percent. The annual growth in fuels and lubricants index further accelerated by 34.6 percent. Moreover, higher annual gains were posted in the indices of the following commodity groups:
- Sand and Gravel (2.4%);
- Plywood (3.1%);
- Lumber (8.5%);
- Reinforcing Steel (10.3%);
- Structural Steel (8.1%); and
- Electrical Works (7.9%).
The annual change of cement index also rose by 0.5 percent from zero growth in the previous month. On the other hand, annual upticks in the indices of the following commodity groups were slower during the month:
- Hardware (5.4%);
- G.I. Sheet (0.3%);
- Tileworks (2.9%):
- Painting Works (0.6%); and
- PVC Pipes (0.1%).
Other commodity groups either retained their previous month’s rate or had zero growth (see Table 2).
The month-on-month increase of the CMWPI in NCR decelerated to 0.3 percent in June 2018. Its growth in the previous month was recorded at 0.4 percent. Negative monthly rates were posted in the indices of the following commodity groups:
- G.I. Sheet (-1.4%);
- Reinforcing Steel (-0.1%);
- Plumbing Fixtures and Accessories/Waterworks (-0.1%); and
- Painting Works (-0.1%).
In addition, a slower increase was noted in the index of fuels and lubricants at 0.1 percent. Meanwhile, the index of electrical works moved up at a faster pace of 1.5 percent during the month. From a zero growth in the previous month, increases were also observed in the indices of the following commodity groups:
- Sand and Gravel (0.7%);
- Plywood (0.2%);
- Lumber (0.9%); and
- Structural Steel (0.3%).
The rest of the commodity groups exhibited zero growth (see Table 3).
Price mark-ups were seen in petroleum products, sand, gravel, plywood, lumber, flat bars, steel plate and selected electrical materials during the period. On the other hand, prices of G.I. sheets, steel bars, angle valve and paint were generally lower this month.
