  • The annual headline inflation at the national level decelerated to 1.8 percent in August 2016. Last month, it was recorded at 1.9 percent and in August 2015, 0.6 percent. Slowdowns in the annual increases were noted in the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages and recreation and culture (Table 8).

  • Excluding selected food and energy items, core inflation picked up 2.0 percent in August 2016. It was pegged at 1.9 percent in July 2016 and 1.6 percent in August 2015 (Table 15).

    • On the other hand, Inflation in NCR went up 1.2 percent in August 2016. It was registered at 1.0 percent in July 2016 and 0.2 percent in August 2015. This was primarily attributed to higher annual increment posted in the heavily-weighted food and non-alcoholic beverages index. Moreover, the indices for clothing and footwear and furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house also exhibited faster annual rates during the month (Table 8).

    • Following the same trend at the national level, inflation in Areas Outside NCR (AONCR) eased to 2.0 percent in August 2016. Inflation was 2.1 percent last month and 0.8 percent in August 2015. Lower annual growths were observed in the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages and education (Table 8).

      (2006=100)
      AUGUST 2016

    By Region, Year-on-Year

    • Inflation in NCR advanced 1.2 percent in August 2016.
    • The year-on-year growth in AONCR however, improved to 2.0 percent in August 2016. Annual inflation slowed down in eight regions with CAR having the lowest annual gain of 0.9 percent. Meanwhile, the highest annual rate of 3.7 percent was noted in SOCCSKSARGEN.

    By Commodity Group, Year-on-Year

    • At the country level, lower annual increases were posted in the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages and recreation and culture at 2.4 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively. The rest of the commodity groups either moved up at faster rates or retained their previous month’s rate (Table 8).

    • The annual gain of the food alone index in the Philippines eased to 2.5 percent in August. Its annual change last month was 2.8 percent and in August 2015, 1.1 percent (Table 13).

    • Negative annual rate was still recorded in food products not elsewhere classified index at -2.5 percent. Moreover, lower annual growths were noted in the indices of corn at 2.5 percent; meat, 1.9 percent; and vegetables, 6.3 percent. The rest of the food groups had higher annual increases with the index for other cereals, flour, cereal preparation, bread, pasta and other bakery products retaining its last month’s rate of 1.5 percent (Table 10).

    • In NCR, the annual growth of food and non-alcoholic beverages index kicked up to 3.4 percent in August; clothing and footwear index, 2.8 percent; and furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house index, 1.6 percent. The other commodity groups either moved up at slower rates or retained their previous month’s rate with the indices for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels and transport still posting annual decreases (Table 8).

      • On an annual basis, the food alone index in NCR picked up to 3.5 percent in August. Annual adjustment was pegged at 3.3 percent last month and in August 2015, 0.5 percent (Table 13).

      • Higher double-digit annual increases were correspondingly posted in the indices of fish and fruits at 10.9 percent and 10.2 percent in August. In addition, annual add-ons were higher in the indices of milk, cheese and egg at 1.8 percent and oils and fats, 5.0 percent. From a zero annual growth last month, the index for rice moved up by 0.6 percent. Except for the indices of other cereals, flour, cereal preparation, bread, pasta and other bakery products and sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery whose rates correspondingly remained at 2.6 percent and 4.7 percent, the rest of the food groups either recorded annual declines or had lower annual rates (Table 10).

    • In AONCR, a slower annual movement was seen in food and non-alcoholic beverage index at 2.2 percent in August and in education index, 1.5 percent. All the other commodity groups however, exhibited higher annual mark-ups except for the indices of furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; communication; and recreation and culture which retained their last month’s rates (Table 8).
      • The annual gain of the food alone index in AONCR decelerated to 2.3 percent in August. Its annual growth last month was 2.7 percent and in August 2015, 1.3 percent (Table 13).

      • The annual adjustment of food products not elsewhere classified index further dropped by 2.6 percent. In addition, annual increments were slower in the indices of meat at 1.7 percent; fish, 3.2 percent; and vegetables, 7.6 percent.

      • On the other hand, the annual change of rice index went up 0.5 percent in August as eleven regions registered positive annual rates. The highest annual growth of 5.5 percent remained in Central Visayas while the lowest rate of -3.8 percent was still noted in Bicol Region.

      • The rest of the food groups either had higher annual gains or retained their last month’s rates (Table 10).

    By Region, Month-on-Month

  • The month-on-month growth in the prices of consumer items in NCR improved to 0.1 percent in August. The indices for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels decreased by 0.3 percent and transport, -0.2 percent. Moreover, a slower monthly add-on of 0.1 percent was also observed in alcoholic beverages and tobacco index. The rest of the commodity groups either retained their previous month’s rate or had zero growth.

  • The offsetting price movements observed among the commodity groups resulted to a zero growth in consumer prices in AONCR. The indices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco picked up 0.4 percent; recreation and culture, 0.1 percent; and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, 0.2 percent. On the other hand, the indices for clothing and footwear and furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house moved at a slower pace of 0.1 percent while the index for transport further decreased by 0.3 percent. The rest of the commodity groups had zero growth.

  • Mixed month-on-month price movements were seen among the regions. The highest month-on-month growth of 0.3 percent was in Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas and SOCCSKSARGEN while the lowest rate of -0.8 percent was noticed in CAR (Table 7).

  • Among the three big areas of the country, prices of consumer items in Visayas were generally higher compared to those in Luzon and Mindanao areas.

  • By Commodity Group, Month-on-Month

    • Consumer prices in the Philippines generally inched up by 0.1 percent in August. A faster growth of 0.3 percent was posted in furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house index. Slower monthly gains were, however, noted in the indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 0.1 percent and health, 0.2 percent. Movements in the indices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco remained steady at 0.3 percent and clothing and footwear and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, 0.2 percent. The rest of the commodity groups either had negative rates or zero growths (Table 7).

      • The lean month of August saw further increases in the prices of rice. Thus, the rice index in AONCR gained 0.5 percent. Nine regions exhibited higher monthly price mark-ups with Bicol Region recording the highest rate of 1.6 percent. Meanwhile, the rice index in NCR moved up at a slower pace of 0.6 percent. At the country level, the rice index advanced 0.5 percent.

      • The fruit index in NCR accelerated 4.2 percent and in AONCR, 1.9 percent. This was effected by the increments in the prices of mango, banana and papaya. For the Philippines, the group’s index moved up by 2.3 percent.

      • The tight supplies of eggs in the markets caused its prices to go up during the month. Price add-ons in milk were also noticed in many regions. These factors raised the index for milk, cheese and egg in NCR by 0.4 percent and in AONCR, 0.2 percent. At the national level, the group’s index rose 0.3 percent.

      • The vegetables index in AONCR went down by 2.1 percent due to abundant supplies of vegetables in the markets particularly cabbage, okra, carrots and leafy vegetables. On the other hand, mustasa, malunggay, pechay, camote tops and garlic were priced higher in NCR. Hence, the vegetables index in the area picked up 0.6 percent. At the national level, the group’s index declined by 1.7 percent.

      • The general downward price adjustments in selected spices and condiments such as ginger and calamansi resulted to a 0.7 percent reduction in the index of food products not elsewhere classified in NCR and -0.8 percent in AONCR. For the Philippines, the index fell by 0.9 percent (Table 9).

    • Price add-ons in meals eaten outside the home in selected provinces were noted during the month. Some items for personal care and effects were also priced higher in NCR and in selected provinces. Thus, a 0.1 percent growth was noted in the index for restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services in NCR and 0.2 percent in AONCR. For the Philippines, the group’s index had a 0.2 percent growth.

    • The index for furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house rose 1.0 percent in NCR and 0.1 percent in AONCR. This was due to higher prices in selected furniture and household appliances in some provinces. Increased salary of household helper was also observed in NCR. The national index gained 0.3 percent.

    • The general price cuts in gasoline and diesel nationwide along with cheaper ship fares in selected provinces during the month pushed down the transport index in NCR by 0.2 percent and in AONCR, -0.3 percent. At the country level, the group’s index decreased by 0.3 percent.

    • The index for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels in AONCR registered a zero growth in August. Lower charges in electricity rates and price cuts in kerosene and LPG were noted in many provinces. These factors offset higher charges in electricity rates and upward price adjustments in charcoal and firewood in some provinces during the month. On the other hand, the group’s index in NCR declined by 0.3 percent. This can be attributed to big price rollbacks in LPG and kerosene and lower charges in electricity rates in the area. At the national level, the group’s index fell by 0.1 percent (Table 7)
