EXPORTED GOODS DECREASE BY 3.8 PERCENT IN MAY 2016
The Philippines’ export sales amounted to $4.711 billion in May 2016, a 3.8 percent decrease from $4.899 billion recorded value in May 2015. The decrease was attributed to five major commodities out of the top ten export commodities for the month. These include other mineral products (-43.8%), articles of apparel and clothing accessories (-41.7%), chemicals (-37.2%), metal components (-14.0%), and electronic products (-4.0%) (Table 1).
Furthermore, total merchandise exports for the period January to May 2016 registered a 6.6 percent decrease from $23.638 billion in 2015 to $22.074 billion in the same period of 2016 (Table 1a).
EXPORTS OF ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS WENT DOWN BY 4.0 PERCENT
Electronic Products remained as the country’s top export with total receipts of $2.263 billion, accounting for 48.0 percent of the total exports revenue in May 2016. It went down by 4.0 percent from $2.357 billion registered in May 2015. Components/Devices (Semiconductors), with the biggest share of 33.4 percent among electronic products, however, decreased by 11.8 percent from $1.785 billion in May 2015 to $1.574 billion in May 2016.
Machinery and Transport Equipment was the second top export earner in May 2016 with export revenue of $376.59 million. Export sales for this commodity group accelerated by 29.3 percent from $291.23 million in May 2015.
Other Manufactures ranked third at $351.65 million or 7.5 percent share to the total export receipts. It recorded an increase of 1.5 percent from May 2015 value of $346.39 million.
Woodcrafts and Furniture ranked fourth, with a contribution of 6.4 percent share to the total export receipts, recording sales of $303.69 million in May 2016. It registered a 49.7 percent increase from the previous year level of $202.86 million.
Ignition Wiring Set and Other Wiring Sets Used in Vehicles, Aircrafts and Ships was recorded as the country’s fifth top export earner with value at $146.04 million or 3.1 percent share to total exports. It went up by 6.8 percent from $136.77 million in same period of 2015.
Rounding up the list of the top ten exports with corresponding export sales for the month of May 2016 were:
- Chemicals with $145.52 million, decelerated by 37.2 percent;
- Miscellaneous Manufactured Articles, n.e.s with $120.98 million, rose by 188.6 percent;
- Metal Components with $99.52 million, fell by 14.0 percent;
- Other Mineral Products with $87.08 million, dropped by 43.8 percent.
- Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories with $78.00 million, decreased by 41.7 percent;
Total receipts from the top ten exports decreased by 1.0 percent in 2016 and reached $3.972 billion, or 84.3 percent of the total exports.
EXPORTS OF MANUFACTURED GOODS SLIGHLTY DECREASE BY 0.5 PERCENT
Outward shipments of Manufactured Goods were valued at $4.176 billion, accounting for 88.6 percent of the total export receipts in May 2016. It recorded a minimal decreased by 0.5 percent from $4.198 billion recorded in May 2015 (Table 2).
Exports from Total Agro-Based Products, with a 5.0 percent share to total exports in May 2016, amounted to $233.40 million. It reduced by 29.4 percent from $330.61 million in May 2015.
Merchandise exports from Mineral Products, which shared 4.6 percent of the total exports revenue, moved down by 13.6 percent from $251.12 million in May 2015 to $216.98 million in May 2016.
Special Transactions with a 1.4 percent share to total exports, decreased by 23.6 percent from $84.88 million in May 2015 to $64.82 million in May 2016.
Petroleum Products, with 0.4 percent share, declined by 33.4 percent from $27.88 million in May 2015 to $18.57 million in the same month in 2016.
Moreover, sales from Forest Products, accounting for less than 0.1 percent share of the total exports, decreased by 82.6 percent from $7.07 million in May 2015 to $1.23 million in same period of 2016.
JAPAN ACCOUNTS FOR 22.1 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL EXPORTS IN MAY 2016
Total export receipts from the country’s top ten market destinations for the month of May 2016 was valued at $3.857 billion, accounting for 81.9 percent share of the total export receipts (Table 3). See Figure 4.
Japan including Okinawa remained as the country’s top export destination with revenue amounting to $1.041 billion, comprising 22.1 percent share to total exports for May 2016. It increased by 1.5 percent from $1.026 billion recorded in the same month a year ago.
United States of America (USA) including Alaska and Hawaii ranked second, accounting 14.9 percent of total exports, with receipts valued at $703.54 million in May 2016. It recorded a decrease of 3.7 percent from $730.57 million in same month last year.
Hong Kong ranked third with $513.67 million or 10.9 percent share of the total exports. It fell by 2.5 percent from $526.82 million recorded in the same month last year.
People’s Republic of China with 10.6 percent share to total exports, ranked fourth with shipments valued at $499.15 million. It went down by 13.7 percent from $578.21 million in same month a year ago.
Singapore placed fifth, representing a 5.9 percent share to total exports, with export earnings worth $275.85 million. It decelerated by 15.7 percent from $327.36 million posted in May 2015.
Other top ten market destinations for May 2016 were: Germany, $182.45 million; Thailand, $175.61 million; Taiwan, $163.98 million; Republic of Korea, $160.41 million; and Netherlands, $140.69 million.
Exports to Other Countries which was valued at $854.27 million accounted for 18.1 percent from the total exports for the month of May 2016. Among the Other Countries, Malaysia recorded the highest at $86.70 million or 1.8 percent of the total exports.
MORE THAN 50 PERCENT OF EXPORTS ARE FOR COUNTRIES IN EAST ASIA
Majority of the country’s merchandise exports in May 2016 went to countries in East Asia, accounting for 50.6 percent share to total exports valued at $2.383 billion. It decreased by 3.4 percent from $2.467 billion of May 2015.
Commodities exported to ASEAN member countries comprised 14.0 percent of the total exports in May 2016 and was valued at $659.71 million. This registered a decrease of 10.2 percent from $734.68 million posted in same month a year ago.
Exports to European Union member countries, with 12.4 percent share to total merchandise exports amounted to $584.67 million. It recorded a 5.0 percent decrement from $615.43 million recorded in May 2015 (Table 3a).
Technical Notes
Export trade statistics are compiled by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) from copies of export declarations filed with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) by exporters or their authorized representatives as required by law. PSA collects a copy of the accomplished form Export Declaration (ED – DTI form). Aside from the hard copy of the ED, the output of the Automated Export Documentation System (AEDS) is being utilized to generate export statistics. AEDS is a paperless transaction in lieu of the manual filling-up of export documents. The digitized copy of the AEDS is provided by BOC and PEZA to PSA on a monthly basis through email.
All documents (hard copies and e-files) received before the cut-off date which is every 25th day of the month are compiled, processed and generated in a monthly statistical tables for the preparation of Press Release. All documents received after the cut-off date, however, are processed and included in the generation of the revised statistical tables. Processing includes coding, editing, review and validation. Revised statistical tables are made available 10 to 15 working days after the press release date.
The Press Release is due every 10th day of each month. However, if the 10th day falls on a Saturday, release will be on Friday but if it falls on a Sunday or Monday the release will be on Tuesday. If the release date falls on holiday, the date of release is moved accordingly.
The 2004 Philippine Standard Commodity Classification (PSCC) is used to classify the commodities at the most detailed level for statistical purposes.
