- Value of Production Index exhibits two-digit growth in May 2018
The Value of Production Index (VaPI) for manufacturing reflected a year-on-year growth of 21.3 percent from a negative growth rate of 2.6 percent in the same month of the previous year, based on the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). The increase was brought about by the expansion in VaPI for the 13 major sectors led by printing, with a three-digit increase of 107.2 percent. Other eight sectors with significant increase in VaPI were: petroleum products (56.6%), food manufacturing (32.5%), miscellaneous manufactures (26.3%), beverages (25.0%), electrical machinery (21.1%), textiles (20.7%), paper and paper products (11.9%) and machinery except electrical (10.4%). Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production Index posts significant increase
The Volume of Production Index (VoPI) went up by 19.8 percent, recovering from a negative 0.6 percent in May 2017. Of the 14 major sectors that exhibited increases in VoPI, seven sectors registered two-digit growth led by printing with three-digit growth of 117.8 percent. Other significant increases were reported by the following: petroleum products (33.3%), food manufacturing (32.5%), miscellaneous manufactures (19.2%), textiles (18.8%), electrical machinery (17.4%) and rubber and plastic products (12.6%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales Index sustains its two-digit growth
The Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) likewise gained, posting a two-digit growth of 11.9 percent in May 2018. Sectors that largely contributed to the growth in VaNSI were observed in the following: tobacco products (44.0%), basic metals (32.9%), beverages (20.3%), food manufacturing (20.1%), leather products (19.0%), miscellaneous manufactures (18.8%), paper and paper products(16.9%), electrical machinery (11.2%) and furniture and fixtures (10.7%). Refer toTables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales Index accelerates
The Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) maintained its two-digit growth of 10.6 percent in May 2018. Among the 15 major sectors reporting increases, six significantly influenced the growth, namely: basic metals (24.9%), rubber and plastic products (22.9%), food manufacturing (22.7%), leather products (19.8%), paper and paper products (16.2%) and footwear and wearing apparel (10.9%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
Average Capacity Utilization Rate in May 2018 is 84.2 percent with petroleum products posting the highest among industries
Average capacity utilization rate in May 2018 for total manufacturing was recorded at 84.2 percent. Sixty percent or 12 of the 20 major industries operated at 80 percent and above capacity utilization rates. These are:
- petroleum products (89.5%)
- basic metals (88.8%)
- non-metallic mineral products (86.8%)
- machinery except electrical (86.1%)
- food manufacturing (85.6%)
- chemical products (85.1%)
- electrical machinery (84.9%)
- paper and paper products (83.7%)
- rubber and plastic products (83.1%)
- printing (81.7%)
- wood and wood products (81.2%)
- textiles (80.8%)
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was recorded at more than one-fourth of the total number of establishments (27.2%) in May 2018. About 54.2 percent of the total establishments operated at 70 percent to 89 percent capacity while almost one-fifth of the total establishments (18.6%) operated below 70 percent capacity. Refer to Table B and 6.
