During the first quarter of 2019, the total volume of fisheries production was registered at 1.01 million metric tons.  It posted an increase of 0.9 percent from its previous year’s level of 1.00 million metric tons. Commercial and municipal fisheries subsectors both displayed positive growth rates while decline in production was noted in aquaculture.

Of the seven major species, roundscad and skipjack showed improvements in output by 36.2 and 6.5 percent, respectively compared with the same period a year ago.  Other major species exhibited diminished production included yellowfin tuna (13.9%), milkfish (4.7%), tilapia (3.2%), tiger prawn (0.9%) and seaweed (0.7%).

The volume of production from commercial fisheries was estimated at 218.98 thousand metric tons, which grew by 1.2 percent compared with its previous year’s level of 216.32 thousand metric tons.  The subsector comprised 21.6 percent of the total fisheries output.

Output from municipal fisheries was recorded at 269.46 million metric tons during the quarter which increased by 5.7 percent from previous year’s production of 255.00 thousand metric tons.  Of its total volume, 86.3 percent came from marine municipal fisheries while the rest came from inland fisheries.  Municipal fisheries contributed 26.6 percent to total fisheries.

Harvests from aquaculture farms reached 526.05 thousand metric tons during the period.  The volume was 1.5 percent lower than the previous year’s level of 534.01 thousand metric tons.  The subsector took the largest share of 51.9 percent of total fisheries.
