An average of 1,458 persons die  daily 
 
The reported deaths in 2013 numbered  531,280, an increase of 16,535 or 3.2 percent from 514,745 deaths recorded in 2012.  In 2013, an average of 1,458 persons died daily or 61 deaths per hour.
 
The number of deaths from 2004 to 2013 showed a slightly increasing trend.  The number of deaths increased at an average of 3.2 percent annually, that is, from 403,191 in 2004 to 531,280 in 2013. The highest peak of increase was recorded in 2005 with 5.7 percent, while the smallest increase was recorded in 2007 at 0.2 percent (See Figure 1 and Table 1).
 
 
 
 
Six out of ten deaths occur in Luzon 
 
 
Out of the total registered deaths, 59.2 percent were registered in Luzon. In fact, the top three regions in terms of number of deaths were in this area.  Region IV-A recorded the highest number of deaths at 75,743 or 14.3 percent of the total deaths.   Second and third in rank were the National Capital Region with 71,050 deaths or 13.4 percent and Region III with 60,409 deaths or 11.4 percent, respectively (Figure 2).  
 
 
On the other hand, the three regions with lowest number of registered deaths were the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) with 1,484 deaths (0.3%), followed by Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) with 7,349 (1.4%), and Caraga 12,535 (2.4%).
 
 
 
  
Deaths are high in age groups under 1 and 80 and over
 
As can be seen in Figure 3, male deaths were higher than female deaths from infancy to adulthood except at ages 75 and over where there were more female deaths than male deaths.  
 
The lowest proportion of deaths occurred at ages 10-14.  Meanwhile, there were more infant deaths that occurred compared to deaths that occurred among 1-9 years old.
 
 
Two in five deaths  are medically attended
 
 
A total of 219,780 deceased persons or about 41.4 percent of the total deaths were medically attended. 
 
NCR was the only region with more than half (56.9%) of its total death occurrences which were medically attended. On the other hand, ARMM had the lowest record of medically attended deaths of only 194 (17.1%).   
 
 
  
 
One in five infant deaths occurs in NCR 
 
Out of 21,992 registered infant deaths, NCR had the most number of infant deaths registered in 2013 at 20.1 percent of the total infant deaths registered in the country.  This was followed by Region IV-A and Region III with 3,771 (17.1%) and 2,182 (9.9%) infant deaths, respectively. 
 
In contrast, ARMM had the lowest number of infant deaths registered at only 43 or 0.2 percent of the total (Figure 5 and Table 5). 
 
Male infant deaths (12,699 or 57.7%) were recorded higher than female infant deaths (9,293 or 42.3%). 
 
 
 
 
The number of maternal deaths are highest in NCR 
 
There were 1,522 registered maternal deaths in the country. Among all regions, NCR was recorded to have the biggest number of maternal deaths with 279 or 18.3 percent of the total. Next was Region IV-A with 170 or 11.2 percent and Region VII with 151 or 9.9 percent. 
 
On the other hand, CAR had the least number of maternal deaths recorded with 19 or 1.2 percent (Figure 6 and Table 6).
 
 
 
 
 
Note: Data on deaths in this Special Release were obtained from the Certificates of Death (Municipal Form No. 103), transmitted by the City/Municipal Registrars all throughout the country to the Philippine Statistics Authority.  Statistics presented include only those deaths which occurred from January 2013 to December 2013.  No adjustment for under-registration was made in the analysis.
