Bert Joseph F. Prestoza from Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) emerged as victor of the 24th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) National Finals which was held at GT Toyota Asian Center Auditorium at the University of the Philippines-Diliman on December 8, 2015. Through Bert’s win, CAR was able to reclaim the championship title which it last held in 2010. This year’s success also marks the fourth time the region has won the finals.

In her welcome remarks, Deputy National Statistician Estela T. de Guzman expressed her gratitude to the participating schools, contestants, and coaches for embracing the challenge of the PSQ. She hoped that they will continue to promote the field of statistics even after the activity. Giving more encouraging words, National Statistician Lisa Grace S. Bersales emphasized the importance of involving the young in the field of statistics. She shared that in United Nation’s post 2015 – development agenda, statistics plays a central role. She said that by then, it is the youth of today that shall carry on the 17 goals of the Sustainable Development Goals. She was very proud that the Philippines has already taken the initiative to involve the youth in statistics through the PSQ.

DNS de Guzman’s and NS Bersales’ words certainly inspired the contestants as they performed very well during the contest. Assistant National Statistician Minerva Eloisa P. Esquivias served as the contest’s quizmaster.

The young whizzes battled it out in 3 nerve-racking rounds. The cumulative score at the end of the contest determined the rank of the contestants. Coming in second to Bert was Mervin June B. Gasatan from Region VIII. The third place went to Isaac Edron J. Orig from Region XI and the fourth place to Emmanuel J. Basaya from Region V. The fifth place had to be determined by a tiebreaker where Neil Christian F. Buenaobra from Region IV-B prevailed over NCR’s Mariano Niño V T. Oliva.

During the first round, Emmanuel dominated the contest with 9 points while Bert and a few others had 8.  Bert took the lead in the second round by getting a perfect 10.  Mervin ruled the third round in terms of scoring, but it was Bert’s consistent high points which made him the contest’s national champion.

As the National Champion, Bert received a cash prize of Php 30,000.00 and a specially-designed trophy while his coach, Mr. Harold O. Lagto, received Php 15,000.00.  His win was announced by Dr. Romulo A. Virola, Chairperson of this year’s Board of Judges.  Joining Dr. Virola in the judging panel are former NSO Administrator Carmelita N. Ericta and former NSO Deputy Administrator Nelia R. Marquez. Dr. Virola announced the contest winners while NS Bersales, DNS de Guzman, and the other judges awarded the winners and their coaches with the prizes.

The PSQ is an annual undertaking of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI). The contest aims to assess the competency of college freshmen on statistics and foster public awareness and appreciation of the field.
